Welcome
Yes my friends, RovingFork is yet another food blog. We are trying to express everyday culinary experiences as something more than fulfilling a need for sustenance. The world revolves around art, entertainment, socialization, and business.
Food, and the preparation and consumption of it, is all of these things.
The perfect combination of ingredients can be revealed in a manner which is chemically exact, measured to the milligram by a professional chef, resulting in perfect reactions on a molecular level. But the perfect combination of ingredients can also be found in food prepared by someone with no training, working from memory, using such rudimentary devices as “the palm” or “the pinch.” Either way, sensory stimulation…or for lack of a better word, deliciousness…is like art: open to interpretation.
You no doubt remember the first time you saw the Kasseri go up in flames at a Greek restaurant. Eyes wide as you heard “OPA!” and felt the heat from flaming brandy. Or the sense of freshness from a Caesar salad prepared tableside, or creamy bisque broth poured by your server over waiting hunks of lobster tail. That first perfect pairing of wine with food, explained in great detail by an on-staff sommelier, transporting you mentally to a vineyard that you may never see in person. All of these things are a sort of adult Disneyland, each culinary revelation a different ride in the park…the ultimate in entertainment.
The best meals are shared amongst friends, and the the experience can run the gamut. A shared meal can often be a contest of who has ordered the better entree, with you gloating as you take each bite, but never really knowing if your neighbor has made the best pick. A shared meal can also be a smorgasbord of tasting, passing around of plates, and exchanging reviews. Food inspires discussion, but much more so than other hobbies. Because food is not a hobby…everybody eats. Everybody, on some level, is a food critic. We all have taste buds, and we love to talk about what happens to them. Nothing is more social than food.
Food is also very much a business, and a difficult one at that. This blog will serve in part as a diary of my journey…through recipes, traveling, eating, reviews of other establishments, and deciphering the intricacies of the restaurant business…as I make baby steps toward my ultimate goal of restaurant ownership.
I hope you all find something worthwhile here at RovingFork.com, that I fill some kind of niche, and that you find the inspiration you are looking for to create a great meal, enjoy a great meal, or make a living or find personal fulfillment in creation of meals and menus.
Good luck!
